Camille Pissarro, a Truly Influential Impressionist Artist

To those that are true fans and connoisseurs of the 19th-century art movement and everything that followed it, Camille Pissarro will likely be a well-known name. Growing up and working alongside the great artists of the early 1800s, this Danish-French painter allowed himself no boundaries, contributing to impressionist art, post-impressionist art, and even in his 50s, took to the world of neo-impressionist art.

Born in 1830 in St Thomas, an island in the Caribbean, Pissaro discovered his love for art after being sent to a French school near Paris. Though his father insisted he work for the family business, Pissarro took every chance he could to develop his art skills when he wasn't working. He went on to paint stunning landscapes and rural scenes alongside influential artists like Jean Baptiste, Camille Corot, and Jean Francis Millet.

It was when he was in his 40s, he met and mentored young and talented artists like Paul Cezanne, Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre Auguste Renoir, and Claude Monet, who considered him to be a father figure not only to them personally, but to all impressionist painters. Despite the popularity of his work waning in his final years, Pissarro is still regarded as one of the most influential impressionist artists, which led renowned art critic Emile Zola to refer to him as one of the few true painters of that era. These are some of the masterpieces he created that left the world in awe of his incredible skills and passion.
