24 Photos of Amsterdam Between 1890 and 1910

George Hendrik Breitner was a leading Dutch impressionist artist, who was known for frequently sketching everyday scenes on the streets of Amsterdam, alongside his friend and fellow artist, Vincent Van Gogh. At some point in the 1890s, Breitner decided that painting wasn't enough, and took up the art of photography as well. Much like his paintings, Breitner’s photographs are far more concerned with atmosphere and motion than they are with fidelity and sharpness.
