Breathtaking Photos of the Arctic

Surrounded by the hustle and bustle of urban (and suburban) life can take its toll after a while. Sometimes you just need to get away from it all - the crowds, the people, the noise, the traffic and the buildings. Of course, that's not always a realistic option, so looking through these stunning photos of Finnish Photographer Tiina Törmänen is your next best alternative. In this photo series, she captures the vast, icy beauty of the Arctic tundra. In this breathtaking place, human contact is rare, and the sky looms huge and distant.

Törmänen's shots capture the wild and fragile beauty of the region.

They also capture an immense sense of solitude that this place brings.

To capture a sense of aloneness, Törmänen goes the extra mile, by incorporating lone human figures into her photos.

The person in the photos is Törmänen herself. Taken with a timer, they reveal that when shooting, she was all alone in this gorgeous but unforgiving land.

But, as depicted in the photos, the sense of being alone isn't frightening or unpleasant.

Instead, they depict a meditative and awe-inspiring feeling, reminding us that while humans are a massive force, we are still very small when compared to our planet and our surroundings.

The photos were taken in Sapmi, also known as Lapland, a region located in the northernmost areas of Scandinavia and western Russia.

The region is relatively unpopulated. Consequently, light pollution is limited, allowing millions of stars to be visible.

While at night the stars are a breathtaking sight to see, the landscape during the day is majestic.
