Buckwheat pillows aren’t for everyone, but if other pillows have let you down, they may be the right choice for you. The name is pretty self-explanatory – these are pillows filled with 100% buckwheat hulls. They originated in Japan, where they are called sobakawa (soba means buckwheat, like soba noodles!).
Unlike most pillows, buckwheat pillows are quite firm, offering steady support for the neck, soft tissues, and airways. Buckwheat pillows are filled with hulls, which are the outer shells of buckwheat seeds. These hulls provide a unique firmness and shape that helps evenly distribute pressure and support the head and neck. The hulls also allow air to circulate freely, which helps to keep the pillow cool and comfortable.
The hulls are small enough to make the pillows malleable. You can adjust it to the curve of your neck for a custom-fit cervical alignment. Buckwheat pillows are heavier than the average pillow. After you shape it to your body, it won't give or move very much.
One of the most attractive advantages of these pillows is how customizable they are. Most companies make pillows with zippers so that you can remove or add holes to make the pillow flatter or larger.
Buckwheat hulls have a concave triangular shape which provides airflow. This not only prevents mold but also provides relief for hot sleepers. Being 100% natural, buckwheat pillows are well-suited for allergic and sensitive people, and those looking for a chemical-free sleeping environment.
With proper use, they will last you 8 to 10 years. You may find your buckwheat pillow flattens over time. For this reason, many companies provide extra refills. To help combat this, it is recommended that you top up your pillow with a refill every 1-2 years.
How do I clean my buckwheat pillow?
It couldn’t be easier! Simply empty the hulls into a bowl and let them air out in the sun. Machine wash the pillowcase in a cold setting. Hang to dry. Once fully dry, refill the pillow and enjoy it as usual.
• When looking to buy a buckwheat pillow, make sure you get one with a zipper to enjoy its customizing benefits;
• As the buckwheat filling is relatively heavy, make sure the pillow case is made from sturdy fabric, thick enough to handle the weight;
• If you have never tried an adjustable pillow before, give yourself 3 to 5 days of trial and error before finally making up your mind about the pillow;
• Due to their size, most buckwheat pillows will be smaller than the average pillow. 15" x 20“ (40 x 50 cm) is the most common size.
⁃ Children under three years old;
⁃ Those with noise sensitivities (buckwheat hulls rustle a bit when you move them);
⁃ Those who prefer softer pillows with mild support.
